This is the pencil base for the "Balthier & Vaan Suggle" digital painting.
I got a few PM's asking about the process so I decided to show the starter image. Maybe it will help to see both the inception and the end product.
Perhaps sometime I might do a more in depth digital painting tutorial. Hmmm...I always thought about it. I am just so lazy about that sort of thing.
Anyhow, Balthier changed a lot during the painting process. And as you can tell, the pencil work doesn't really stay at all. It gets painted over. But it definitely guides the process. Balthier's concept art had some flaws though, so during the painting process, he leg, arm and head all saw major changes.
Thank you for posting this! It does help to see what you start with, and pretty interesting to see you paint over such a detailed sketch. You almost redraw the whole thing. I'd be lazier
I started out years ago in traditional media where when you oil paint, you are doing so over a drawing, or at least guidelines. So when I switched to digital, I sorta kept that practice for some kinds of works.
The coloured version came out very well, but I'm actually mor eimpressed by how accurate the line-art is, that's something I really have been neglecting in favour of colour
Oh, and that's a never seen before pairing too, so it's at least original too

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
